01 · The challenge
Difficult history, handled with care.
2Ways Consultancy delivers cultural competency learning that helps organisations build deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, history and culture. Elevate designed and developed Our Shared Past as a self-paced companion to their facilitator-led learning.
The subject matter carried significant emotional and cultural weight. It needed to be presented accurately and respectfully, without the feel of a conventional compliance module.
When the subject matter carries weight, the learning experience needs to carry it with care.
02 · The approach
Designing with care.
Sensitivity shaped more than the wording — it guided imagery, pacing, interaction and video. Working closely with 2Ways, their cultural expertise led the narrative and representation throughout.
01
Narrative before instruction
Branching storytelling let learners move through the history as an experience, not a sequence of information screens.
02
Private reflection
Unscored prompts gave space to consider challenging ideas without assessing a personal response.
03
Choice without gamification
Learners made meaningful choices, without points, badges or scores trivialising the subject.

Private reflection
Space to pause and consider without recording or sharing a response.
03 · The outcome
A companion experience, not a tick-box exercise.
Our Shared Past gave 2Ways a polished, self-paced companion to their facilitated cultural competency training — one that handles sensitive history without reducing it to a tick-box exercise.
Culturally guided storytelling and thoughtful design give learners space to reflect in their own time, while preserving the care and intent of the original program.
